THE FIRST VISIT

The first dental visit, according to the American academy of pediatric Dentistry, must be completed by the child’s first birthday. It surely should not be later than 3 years of age. In this first dental visit:

  1. a full preventive dental check up will be completed (dental check up, cleaning and fluoride treatment). If the pediatric dentist thinks is necessary, X-rays are taken.
  2. a thorough medical history is required from the patient’s parent or guardian.
  3. all procedures resample an interactive play, so the child will have a very pleasant experience.
  4. After the treatment, we provide the child with the appropriate oral hygiene instructions and a treatment plan will be discussed, according to the needs of the individual patient.

We encourage parents to stay with the patients throughout the whole dental visit. There are some exceptions though, when the parents should be removed for the benefit of our young patient.

Our advice to the parents for this first visit is NOT to try to prepare the young patients for it, because in most of the cases that creates additional fear and stress to the child.

ORAL HYGIENE INSTRUCTIONS

In order to preserve good oral hygiene, our young patients are taught:

pacifier Both of these habits can prove disastrous for the occlusion and the jaws development. With the parent’s guidance, the young patients should abandon them before the permanent teeth erupt.

mouth-wash It is always recommended by the dentist to children older than 6 years.

floss Ever night, children older than 6 years, should use dental floss, additionally to their brushing. Younger children can use dental floss in special holders.

tooth-paste Since the age of 18 months, the use of fluoridated toothpaste is highly recommended. The content of fluoride should not be more than 500ppm until the age of 6. After the age of 6, when the children control the swallowing reflex, the content should be 1000-1450ppm fluoride. The dentist can recommend fluoride tablets to children with severe decay daily and for a certain period.

tooth-brush On the appropriate models the children learn to brush righ so they will effectively remove food and microbial plaque. The brushing should be done at least three times a day, after each meal, after breakfast, lunch and dinner.

candyWe will give advice for good oral hygiene like:
i. Avoiding the frequent consuption of specific groups of food (sweets, juice from concentrated e.t.c).
ii. The proper use of milk bottle.
iii. In specific cases we may ask for dietary diary to investigate the cause of severe dental caries.

SERVICES

This is the most important service provided in our clinic and consists of the following:

Dental check up: we check the occlusion, the soft tissues and all the teeth.
Dental cleaning and polishing: we remove all the dental calculus, microbial plaque and staining.
Fluoride treatment: We place a fluoride gel or varnish on the patient’s teeth once every six months.

DENTAL CARIES TREATMENT

A STAINLESS STEEL CROWN
is placed when the damage is big and a filling won’t last, to protect the tooth until it exfoliates. Primary teeth are very sensitive and easily destroyed by dental decay.

A PULPOTOMY
is inevitable when the dental decay has reached the nerve of the tooth. We clean the nerve, remove all the infected tissues and we place an antiseptic before we place the final restoration.

FILLINGS
help restore teeth damaged by decay back to their normal function, and can prevent further decay. A filling can be a Composite one (white) or Amalgam (black).

The SEALANTS
are placed in order to protect the first permanent molars that erupt in the age of 6. They consist of flowable composite and they close all the pits and fissures of the teeth so food and dental plaque cannot get trapped in them. Some of them have also fluoride. We do not have to drill in order to place them. The studies show that they are 80% effective against dental caries.

Dental decay is a microbiological disease cuased by the microbes inhabiting the oral cavity. Studies have shown that it is the most common children’s disease, more common than asthma.
THE MOST IMPORTANT WEAPON AGAINST DENTAL CARIES IS GOOD PREVENTION.
Other corrective methods that may be used are FILLINGS, STAINLESS STEEL CROWN, PULPOTOMY and SEALANTS.

TRAUMA MANAGEMENT

Traumatic dental injuries often occur in accidents or sports-related injuries. Chipped teeth account for the majority of all dental injuries. Dislodged or knocked-out teeth are examples of less frequent, but more severe injuries. Treatment depends on the type, location and severity of each injury. Any dental injury, even if apparently mild, requires examination by a dentist or an endodontist immediately.

PRIMARY ORTHODONTIC ISSUES

In our clinic we treat orthodontic isssues in primary and early mixed dentintion (until the age of 10) such as:

ii. Cross Bite dental issues: It is very common in many young patients to have cross bite occlusion. This means that the upper teeth bite inside from the lower teeth, just the opposite of the normal occlusion. In our clinic we treat patients with the use of removable or permanent appliances.

i. Space maintenance due to premature tooth loss: If a primary tooth needs to be extracted because of dental decay, we need to preserve the space until the permanent tooth erupts with the use of an appliance.
